ToneWear Vintage Bumblebee Iron Necklace

$ 49.00

In the 50s, Gibson used Sprague Bumblebee capacitors in their guitars. They look nothing like the cheap caps found in most modern guitars. They’re gorgeous little hand-painted black bullets, and many of them are still in great working order. We use nothing but these vintage beauties in our CreamTone harnesses for Gibson and Fender guitars.

Since these vintage capacitors are becoming scarce, we buy them in lots as often as possible. We test them and choose the ones that are perfect for our harnesses, but we also come across several that have drifted so far out of spec that they’re no longer usable as tone caps for electric guitars. No one in our shop would dream of tossing them in the trash, and they’re too good-looking just to let them pile up in a parts bin, so what to do? Wear them!

Introducing ToneWear™, a collection of necklaces designed by CreamTone and handcrafted with authentic vintage Sprague capacitors right here in our shop!

Our chains are made from iron. We wanted to create a piece of top-shelf jewelry that was strong enough to wear onstage. We also wanted to keep the price reasonable. Iron is the perfect choice. Our curb chains are crafted from 4-7 mm iron with a generous coating of rhodium. Rhodium is a silver-white metallic element that is highly reflective and resistant to corrosion. It is considered the rarest and most valuable precious metal in the world — well above gold or silver.* Our chains contain absolutely no nickel, so they won’t cause a toxic reaction or turn your neck green. A lobster clasp keeps it secure around your neck.

Each piece of ToneWear is a one-of-a-kind work of art. Since the old capacitors were painted by hand, every one has its own unique character. Sizes vary, usually depending on the voltage rating of the capacitor. We use 4 mm chain on sizes 1 and 2, and 7 mm on sizes 3 and 4 (see images).

Offered with the following options:

  • Chain length - 18 or 24 inches. See the photos for an example. For reference, the model is 6 feet tall.
  • Size of capacitor - 1-4. See the last photo. Size 1 is an inch long by .25 inches wide; size 2 is 1.25 x .375; size 3 is 1.25 x .5; size 4 is 1.375 x .5. Measurements are approximate.
  • Custom builds are available at an additional cost. You will receive photos of the capacitors we have on hand and choose the exact cap for your necklace. We also have a few 1960s Black Beauties reserved just for these necklaces. We will make the chain any length you choose. Please contact us for pricing.

Please make your selections form the menu at the top of this description.

Each necklace comes attractively packaged with a wallet-sized COA. Handcrafted in USA.
